Interchange Plus Pricing Credit Card Processing Includes Dues & Assessments
In most interchange plus, cost plus, or pass through pricing credit card processing programs, the term Interchange refers specifically to the credit and debit card interchange rates or interchange fees set by the Card Associations: Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. However, merchant payment processors and aquiring banks must also collect the Card Association's Dues and Assessments, and these charges are usually passed through to the merchant or considered part of the "cost" or "interchange" in cost plus, interchange plus, or pass through pricing programs.
It is becoming more and more common for some or all of the Card Association Dues and Assessments to be passed through to the merchant in both interchange plus and tiered pricing arrangements.
When getting a quote for interchange-plus pricing always ask, "Does the interchange plus mark-up or fee for processing services include dues & assessments?" In most cases it does not.
The example below shows the total cost for a base Visa card present credit card transaction CPS/Retail, including Dues & Assessments, Processing Services (the plus in interchange plus), and the Interchange Rate for the Card Brand, Card Type, and Acceptance Method (CPS/Retail).
